In Defense of Obama's Nobel Peace Prize

Newsweek

By Ben Adler and Daniel Stone

Finally, there's something that Hizbullah and the Republican National Committee can agree about. The reasons that President Obama should not have won the Nobel Peace Prize have been well established here and across the political spectrum. Of course, there are people who have saved more lives, if that's the measure of who should win the award. And by giving it to Obama now it raises the question: what if Obama actually does make monumental achievements in global peace as president? Or what if he does not? What if, say, he embroils the U.S. in a deadly quagmire in Afghanistan, or by exiting Afghanistan and Iraq prematurely leaves behind chaos and violence? Alas, as with National Magazine Awards, there are no retractions for Nobels that look undeserved in hindsight.

But the immediate consensus that Obama is a ludicrously undeserving choice, and that his selection is pure political hackery on the part of the committee, is a little too sure of itself. Why is Martin Luther King Jr. held up as an obviously correct choice and Obama as an obviously wrong one? Obama will likely go down in U.S. history—regardless of his record in foreign affairs—as the greatest single civil-rights hero since King. Like King, Obama won, merely by his election, a major victory over the history of (often violent) racism in America, the world's most powerful nation. And he did so on a platform of multilateralism and foreign engagement from Iran to Cuba that was controversial even within his own party. In the Senate he forged a strong relationship with über-realist Sen. Dick Lugar (R-Ind.) to work together on preventing nuclear proliferation. He was the only major candidate in either party who could claim he opposed the Iraq War before it began.

So, when you consider the fact that Obama was nominated before he had even done anything as president, you certainly could see it as an extension of Europe's middle finger to his predecessor. But you could also see it as an award not for his concrete policy successes but for his personal achievement to be elected the first African-American president, the child of an immigrant and a single mother, with a Muslim name, an Asian stepfather and half-sister, a wife who descended from slaves. And/or it could be for his achievement for being elected president on an international platform that the Nobel committee considers a refreshing humanitarian turn for the world's great hyperpower. Or for giving his moving speech on race in Philadelphia, or for addressing 200,000 Berliners, or his conciliatory speeches at the last two Democratic conventions, or his pragmatic address to a Chicago antiwar rally in 2002.

It's hardly a no-brainer that he, above all others, should have won, and so early in his presidency, but it's not necessarily just the fanboy-ism and Republican hatred of the Nobel committee. Maybe it is star-struck statesmen jabbing at George W. Bush, John McCain, and all the other Iraq hawks and global-warming deniers and dillydalliers whom most of Europe so despise, and also an award for some achievements that are legitimate.

And wasn't it ever thus? What prize isn't political? Indeed, as Rush Limbaugh has pointed out to my colleague Eve Conant, the Nobel committee has been rewarding Democrats, such as Jimmy Carter and Al Gore, in recent years. And, as Limbaugh mentions, Ronald Reagan also went to Berlin and made a plea for world peace and integration. Reagan played a role in liberating Eastern Europe, and articulated a vision of a world without nuclear weapons. Although his pursuit of national missile defense had the practical effect of spooking the Soviet Union, recent biographies make it clear that Reagan sincerely believed that if it came to fruition he would share the system and eliminate the utility of nuclear weapons. Did Reagan get a Nobel for any of this? Or share Mikhail Gorbachev's? No.

So, complain that the Nobel isn't evenhanded in American politics. Or find a conservative country (Poland?) to endow and host an alternative Peace Prize. But saying Obama is completely undeserving seems a little strong. And it means that, like most Americans today, you're siding with the terrorists.

Davole,

i am not a know-it-all, but when it comes to Peace, it is not about Obama. It is about what he represented and his call for action to open up the dialogue between those with different ideologies. Frankly, in my life i have often had more in common with rural white republicans than liberals when it came to economic development. I believe in the pull yourself up by your own bootstraps. Poor and underdeveloped communities need a hand up, not a hand out...

The fact remains, minorities, immigrants, and the like are scapegoated by reactionaries on one side; and on the other there is a tendency for some to view all white people or all Americans as barbarians. Had not for Obama's leadership, things could get way out of hand.

You ask why Obama said things are getting better. I don't know. I do know that personally my home equity payment went from $500 to $200, and this helped me alot. I do know that i cannot afford health insurance, although i work 16 hours a day, and that we are having a difficult time making payroll... so some things are improving.

I don't believe the economy will significantly improve for some time, especially if we send more troops to Afghanistan. i am opposed to that strategy, and agree with Biden.

Obama is the reflection of the American's peoples will, not the other way around. We put him in office, and those you do not agree with that decision, i am asking you to respect it.

Sure, we need to have dialogue about specific issues. But, this is not about one man. It is about the direction we want America to take. I don't agree with Obama on everything, and i think Biden;'s s

Davole,

While i do agree he must certainly deserved the Noble Peace Prize, i don't agree with everything Obama says or does. And, although i consider you a "reactionary", i suppose we could find common ground somewhere.

you said "In your most recent post, you yet again maintain that white folk on the internet are calling for Barack Obama to be assassinated. I blog on several websites, and I have never seen any of those alleged comments. Besides, again I ask - what factual evidence do you have to support your contention"

AI just did a search for Kill Obama. i got 57,600,000 hits.

Fox News correspondent Liz Trotta said on air this weekend that she'd like to try and kill Barack Obama...Trotta started to talk about the idea of an "Osama" assassination, then corrected herself, saying "Osama, Obama — well, both, if we could." Then the former Washington Times bureau chief laughed like a brainwashed Moonie assassin. Trotta apologized in a later broadcast for her "lame attempt at humor," adding, "it is a very colorful political season.

Amma -

Just like a butterfly, you flutter from one of your topics to another one of your topics, meanwhile disregarding any pertinent replies from other individuals. Why are you so self centered that you are either unwilling or unable to converse with others? I observe that same trait in Barack Obama - he claims that he would appreciate and invite dialogue, and then he and his wolf pack administration utilize a litany of derogatory names to try to “shout down” his opposition.

You claim that Barack Obama “is our President and deserves respect,” and that “he is respected the world over.” Take off your blindfold - that might enable you to see the true picture. Yes, the OFFICE of the president deserves respect, but respect must be earned - it is not automatically warranted. Barack Obama, by his lies and his constant preoccupation with trash-talking quite a few sectors of the American society, and the beneficial accomplishments of previous presidents, has shown that he personally deserves NO RESPECT. Likewise, he is also disrespected throughout the world.

I’m surprised that you would admit that “all of us feel the impact of the worsening economy,”  despite the fact that your pompous saviour pronounces that the economy is recovering. You’d better watch out - stating that opinion could merit your inclusion on his much touted enemies list.

You believe that the US is engaged “in war after war that we CANNOT POSSIBLY WIN.” What  military expert credentials have you earned? Do you ever consider (substitute the word feel) that there is a tragic cost to surrender or withdrawal “that the American people cannot afford”?

You claim “when we continue to viscously (did you mean viciously?) tear each other down, you only benefit our enemies”. Tell that to the Great Divider, Barack Obama. With regard to your statement that “We need jobs, we need affordable housing, we need health care” - tell that also to Barack Obama. Although you must realize (substitute feel) that he has much more important things to do with his time, such as appearing on late night comedy TV shows, jet-setting around the world on international shopping trips for his family, and trash-talking America.

I’m sure that you will win some brownie points for considering me “an enemy of the State.” Wow, “lay off” that obamabo(ugh)t Kool-Aid - that’s dangerous stuff!

But if it’s any consolation to you, I will “show some respect”, but only where it’s warranted, and the narcissistic poor excuse for a president definitely doesn’t deserve any.

You assert that “AMERICA CANNOT WIN A WAR WITH IRAQ ...” - obviously you don’t realize that George W. Bush has been credited with winning that war. But half a year later, that accomplishment was reversed by Barack Obama taking “his eye off the ball” by graciously striving to “wind down” that war, and instead deciding to dither about his stated “war of necessity.”

Don’t you realize that your choice to use your “energy looking for ways to create jobs, to empower small business to enter the Global Economy is just a waste of time and effort, because “The One” is determined to do everything he can to create chaos, thereby enabling him to play on the American public’s fear by ramming more outrageous spending policies down the hapless taxpayers’ throats.

Have you ever realized that the 10 most financially destitute American cities, and the several states which are closest to bankruptcy, all have long-seated democrat governments? All Barack Obama is doing is enabling those same democrat idiotic failed policies to creep throughout the rest of the country.

You suggest “If you are in a community where industry has died, and jobs are not to be found, lets try to come up with a plan ...”. Sure, be realistic for a change (remember when Barack Obama trumpeted that word CHANGE?), and vote the democrat bums out of office. Then you will have better odds of achieving some actual HOPE.

You ask - “as to the pharmaceuticals. -- where is the accountability. why is Bayer still being sold in America”? The honest answer - because Barack Obama prefers to allow his financial supporters to literally, get away with murder.

In your most recent post, you yet again maintain that white folk on the internet are calling for Barack Obama to be assassinated. I blog on several websites, and I have never seen any of those alleged comments. Besides, again I ask - what factual evidence do you have to support your contention that white folk are the instigators? Are you aware that obamabo(ugh)ts regularly resort to Saul Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals, and that subversion dogma advocates committing atrocities while masquerading as your enemy.

Lastly, a friendly bit of advice - after your assertion that “The economy is going to get much worse, before it gets better. It will take 10 years for us to rebuild America.” Don’t you realize that those words directly contradict The Enforcer’s dictate that the economy has already begun to recover? Remember - THE ONE is watching you, and resistence is futile!
