The Actual Bad Sign for Democrats From Tuesday

Ben Adler

Unlike the New York City mayoral, or the Virginia governor's race, there is a really bad sign for Democrats out of the East Coast. Via The New York Times, Republicans made inroads in New York's suburbs. "In Westchester County, where Democrats have a solid advantage in voter registration, a Republican challenger, Rob Astorino, upset the incumbent Democratic County Executive, Andrew Spano, who was seeking his fourth term ... In Nassau County, Republicans recaptured the county legislature, and have come close to unseating the Democratic County Executive, Thomas R. Suozzi, in a race that remained too close to call on Wednesday morning."

Why does this matter so much? Because the New York suburbs epitomize the new Blue America. Twenty-some-odd years ago, the economically diverse, but generally affluent, suburbs in Westchester and Long Island represented the success of the Reagan Revolution. White ethnics, often Catholic, whose parents had lived in the city and voted Democratic, were turning to Republicans for lower taxes, strong national security, and traditional family values. But the New York suburbs led the way back to Democratic dominance, arguably presaging the Obama coalition. Pro-gun-control candidates such as Rep. Carolyn McCarthy from Long Island started picked up seats in the 1990s. Growing diversity and concerns about education in the postindustrial economy helped lead to Democratic inroads in local races.

During the Democrats most recent identity crises, after they lost the 2004 election, New  York Sen. Chuck Schumer wrote a whole book about how Democrats can and should appeal to voters like the ones in the New York suburbs. He knows just how important they are: traditionally in New York politics, the city votes heavily Democratic and upstate favors Republicans. The suburbs decide elections.

Next door in New Jersey, the dynamic is similar, with largely minority cities such as Camden and Newark supporting Democrats and outlying areas of Western and South Jersey leaning towards the GOP. As Andrew notes, crucial swing suburban counties went Republican on Tuesday. If I were David Axelrod, that's what I'd be worried about.

"The Actual Bad Sign for Democrats From Tuesday" other than the high unemployment rate is that a majority of Americans are awake and pissed off.  It will only get uglier if they persist with their Big Nanny State Government ideas that are further destroying the economy.

As thehappyamerican inferred the Dems are neutered when the dead, illegals and made up are not allowed to vote via ACORN.  How is that Hope and Change working for you Leftists? I would love to see California turn against the Dems. The state is run by nutjob Liberals who have bankrupted it.

I appreciate reading this report and  nice analysis, with the understanding that both NJ and the southeastern NY state are deep blue regions where the Dem. had enjoyed a big success one year earlier. The same phenomena could easily occur to coastal area of California, Oregan and Washington and areas surrounding the great lakes. Furthermore, it is not only David Axelod , but also the lawmakers facing next years election, who should feel very nervous about what is happening in the political scene. Apparently, the changes promised by Obama a year early is much less appreciated and received than originally expected by Dem.  for a large part of the nations, including the heavily populated suburbs.

The election shows Democrates need ACORN/SEIU working the voter fraud system at a fast pace, and can not have Americans voicing themselves at Tea Partys in a way the news media can't spin.

Too much clearity and not enough fraud and the DNC can't move!

Good sign for Americans: ACORN/SEIU will be closely watched from now on and splintering into other voter fraud raketeering groups will not work! (We are so on to you!).

And until legislators actually READ the bills  (or vote NO to them) the Tea Parties  will have to continue with the reasonable demand law makers DO read the bills!

Newsweek, like other news outlets, are ignoring the Tea Party effect of the election! Ignoring the fumagation of ACORN/SEIU and their influences being greatly subdued. If liberals don't know what hit em now, they'll get hit again in 2010!

And that is good news for Americans, too!
