The GOP is the GOD party. Remember that Newt Gingrich, David Vitter, and Larry Craig all wanted to impeach Bill Clinton for adultery. They spent millions of dollars preserving the infamous blue dress. When Eliot Spitzer committed the same sin, the GOP, aided by the media, demanded and got Spitzer's resignation. Now that Sanford admits to adultery, it's "let's forgive."

Jesus stand on adultery was quite clear. "Let he who has sinned cast the first stone." Yet when a Democrat "sin", Republicans including Mark Sanford, not only line up for the stoning, but fight each other over who goes first.

Mark Sanford reminds me of that good old fashioned country classic, "The Harper Valley PTA."Once again the GOP proves that they are a bunch of Harper Valley Hypocrites.

The republicans seem to love a good scandal, why else would they put themselves into a position where they must stand before the national camera'a and admit to cheating, lying or paying for sex. What bothers me the most is the denial of hypocrisy. The GOP have hounded any and all democrats who have been caught in such a position and have done it in front of the camera's and have even been able to take it into court. But just last week when John Ensign admitted to an affair with a staffer, he apolized and recieved applause from his fellow republicans. Applause for "coming out"??? Mark Stanford is just another cheating louse. So much for those "conservative value's".....

Sanford should resign. All politicians who cannot keep a vow to a spouse should not be trusted with vows to the country/State/City/County. Republicans usually take the high road and force their members to resign leadership positions and sometimes the position itself. Democrats on the other hand often put their head in the sand and cover their ears as corruption goes on all around them (Fanny and Freddy, Sen. Feinsteins dealings with her husband's co., Pelosi's claim that the CIA was lying to her, Sandy Berger stealing Clinton papers out of the archives, Acorn, Acorn, Acorn, etc., etc.,etc.

I would rather belong to a party that has morals where its members sometimes fall than be a member of a party that has selective morality where almost anything goes without consequences.

In a lot of ways I feel for Sanford. Nobody's made of stone, and romantic entanglements ought to be personal - even if major news services are doing their best to post your mushy erotic love letters to your mistress for two billion people or so to see. But I had to laugh a little at the quote. Where there's smoke, guys...you can recapture your glory, but you've got to tidy up your side of the fence first.

I live in South Carolina and I just have to say:

Has Mark Sanford lost his damn mind?

I mean, it was already blatantly obvious that he couldn't care less about the people and problems of SC, but now he can't even be bothered to stay in the state because too busy breaking every vow he ever took as a governor and as a husband.

I'm disgusted to be represented by this hypocrite.

Thank God I voted democrat.

Personally I am hoping for a very public, very painful impeachment.

It's what he deserves.

It's not about not wanting to share Kimme, but about not giving control of health care to the corrupt and getting more corrupt govt. Did you see the initial price tag? What do Obama and other politicians know about health care and controlling costs? Answer: Nothing.

Sanford went hiking to clear his head, had the urge for some home grown nachos, so he went to South America, fell down and bumped his head while he was hiking..... or, met a good-looking brunette while he was searching for nachos in the Appalachians, was kidnapped by mountain terrorists and taken to South America where he was forced to have sex with a good-looking terrorist spokeswoman..!!!

Holly you almost seem full of glee asking what Republicans should do now. So what should Republicans do now? First off, Mark Sanford is not the President of the Republican Party. So to answer your question, Republicans should do nothing in reaction to this. Your question, story and premise, that this somehow affects the Republican party is pretty stupid.

Let's hope the person who you really need to be spending your time covering, the President, can stop the hemorrhaging of jobs that he promised to stop. Otherwise Holly, your employer, Newsweek may go under at some point in the near future and you will find yourself unemployed. How many unemployed people will be able to afford to purchase your magazine. None... In the meantime, I hope you had your fun today.

If you are trying to imply that only the politicians who get caught with mistresses are the only ones with mistresses, I'm afraid you are completely wrong. Please, show me a Senator or Representative who doesn't have something going on behind the scenes in their personal life (including Obama)!! Just because someone (regardless of their political views and party standing) has trouble in their romantic life (marital status, no matter what it is) in no way makes them incompetent at work. To make a President/Senator/Representative/Governor resign over an affair is absurd. EVERYONE has skeletons in their closets, ESPECIALLY the spineless who are elected office. We all have our favorite candidates, and yes, we sometimes idolize them... but they are regular people with regular problems nonetheless!

This title would be appropriate if we were in the middle of an election/campaign and something like this happened but this is not the case at all!!

The appropriate title would be What Will SANFORD Do and this will be interesting to watch!.

The Republicans have to decide whether they wish to continue claiming they are the party of family values. If you claim you have strong (better than the democrats) family values, then you have to live up to those values. With Newt Gingerich as a party leader who has cheated on two wives, Rush Limbaugh who is divorced three times, John McCain who cheated on a severly injured wife and dumped her, it gets to be a little hard to believe in Republicans as the party of family values.

I don't think Republians cheat any more than democrats but I do think they cheat just as much as democrats and so can't claim any moral supiority.

Republicans do strike me as a failed party because their claims of what they stand for don't really match their actions and voters have come to see them as the failed party. Democrats have been in this position in the past and only time will tell how the Republicans continue from here.

The Dems need to decide if they want to continue the double standard. If it is not a big deal when Bill Clinton gets a Lewinsky in the Oral Office, then it should not be a big deal if the SC Gov has a chippie on the side. The Repubs should strive to promote family values (someone should afterall), but they should also control their zippers better and be understanding when a fellow politician of either party stumbles. If values, morals, etc. were irrelevant, then there would not be this great debate everytime a Dimwitted politician gets busted for having an affair. Hello John Edwards and Mark Sanford.
