Your attempt to compute a percentage to ccmpare men to women is incorrect. It is fair to compute the percentages to compare, but you have the wrong denominator. You should be dividing that one female senator by the total number of female senators, not total senators themselves. Likewise, you can divide male senators who have strayed by total number of male senators... If you would want to go further into the analysis, you would compare total number of senators across the years, just not during one year. Might want to think about updating that because it's not right.

The solution is really kind of simple. People should call for the imprisonment of elected officials who are immoral. We should pass a law, a constitutions amendment: an unfaithful elected official must be sentenced to life in prison. Of course, we would need to increase our prison capacity by 100% and Bill Clinton would be pulling his own Johnson.

You missed Joe Scarborough, a man who quit his congressional campaign to spend more time with his family and then got a divorce, while having a 26-year show up dead at his campaign headquarters.

And I think it would be helpful if you listed the positions of these folks at the time of their arrest. A mayor shouldn't have the same weight (for discussion) as a Senator or President.

Add another Republican to the list - Mississippi's Kirk Fordice, governor in the 1990's, was seriously injured in a car wreck on his way back from Memphis visiting his mistress. He then declared that he was divorcing his wife, who replied "Oh no you're NOT!!!". After that he flew to Paris, France with the mistress. The irony is the Fordices did divorce after his term was up, then Kirk married the mistress. That marriage lasted only a few years, after which Kirk got cancer. His ex-wife (a lovely woman, by the way) was by his side when he died.

I think the number of Republicans and Democrats involved in sex scandals in the long run is probably about even. It's just that (IMH - Democratic - O) the (modern) Republicans seem more hypocritical about it. And it's been going on a long time.

The difference is that, by and large, Democrats do not preach family values and do not come off as self-righteous in telling everyone else how to live their lives. Thus, as always, it is the hypocrisy that condemns the behavior, not the behavior itself. Everyone is human, politicans have more opportunity to cheat than other men because women are attracted to power, and it is not surprising that men in both parties cheat.

I don't think the Republican list is all that complete: Philip Giordano, former mayor of Waterbury, CT is in jail for sex with a minor, Jimmy Swaggart, Ed Shrock, U.S. Representative from Virginia, John Bolton's ex-wife claimed that he forced her to "swing" OR representative Jim Bunn who left his 5 children and wife of 17 years for a staffer whom he then promoted and paid more than was heard of for the position.

I could keep going, I have quite a few more. The point is, Gov. Patterson is kind of a reach, he wasn't involved in a scandal and yet you managed to include him and make the Dem list longer than the Republican list. Obviously this writer is both biased and dishonest.

You are absolutely right, that shouldn't be considered a scandal. It is the other stuff that went with it- putting his lover on the state payroll, living a double life, and then I think the lover accused him of sexual harassment.

He need to resign. He left his office and was missing in action before,sex has nothing to do with his duty. He was family values. He did not want stimulus money when people are losing their jobs. I hope he knows how it feels when you lose ones jobs.

This is a witty bunch - some of your comments are funny. I agree with the post that states that by and large the dems aren't self-righteous and don't preach family values, and do not attempt to legislate morality like the republicants. Thus, it's not the behavior itself, but the complete and utter arrogance and hypocrisy that condemns them. I'm betting the Sanford is gay.

ah yes, Helen Chenoweth. She helped ensure that my home state only makes news for bad things. See, the numbers here don't matter as much when put in the perspective of who's talking the talk. The Republicans may be trailing slightly, but they're the ones who profess to be the party of family values. If they were really the party of family values, they should have far fewer affairs. In reality, this just proves what we already know about both parties: they're slimeballs. Only one party, however, pretends that they're saints.

There would be no outrage or claims of hypocrisy if there were not values, morals that are seen as the norm. So just because Dems don't encourage others to have values does that excuse their behavior more than Repubs? Maybe if we all encouraged "family values" the country would be the better for it. How many innocent children have been killed in Barack Obama's district of Chicago in the past few years? I think I heard it was over 100. Where is the exit strategy to get out of the Gang violence in Chicago?

Of course the number of scandals is about the same. The outrage is that a Party would claim that they held the beliefs, the values, the moral high ground and that voters should consider that to the exclusion of policy. It's the holier than thou routine of the Republicans that's so galling, as if they, and they alone had god on their side.

That's the hypocrisy.

Why did you pick 1976? 1974 had the most relevant SEX SCANDAL to the Governor Sanford event: Wilbur Mills and Fanne Fox, 'The Argentine Firecracker'.....a stripper.......took a dip in the Tidal Basin, while she and Rep Wilbur Mills (who was chairman of the House Ways & Means Committee)......were stopped by a DC cop. (They were both drunk)

Ask Maureen Dowd about it. She'll tell ya! (Those were the good ol' days with good ol' scandals).....the Wayne Hays/Elizabeth Ray scandal was a good one, too.)

*Jim Gibbons (Governor, NV) - Infidelity, spousal abuse, assault, threatening rape.

*Randall Tobias (Global AIDS coordinator, Bush administration) - Infidelity, admitted hiring prostitutes.

*Joseph McDade (PA-10 from 1963-1999, current GOP lobbyist) - Arrested for indecent exposure in 2008.

*Glenn Murphy Jr. (President of the Young Republican National Federation) - Pled guilty in 2008 to deviate conduct after performing unwanted oral sex on a man while he slept.

*John David Roy Atchison (Republican prosecutor, appointed Assistant US Attorney by GW Bush) - Charged with soliciting sex from a five year-old girl in 2007, committed suicide three weeks later.

*Ted Haggard (Close adviser to President Bush) - Hired male prostitutes, forced to resign in 2007.

*Jeffrey Ray Nielsen (Head of Orange County Republican Party, close adviser to Representatives Dana Rohrabacher and Scott Baugh) - Arrested in 2006 for having sex with a 14 year-old boy.
