Kinda

I just got out of the first screening of "Sweeney Todd." The movie is good, but not great. Tim Burton adapts the Sondheim musical into a bloodbath--at one point, the person seated next to me compared it to "Eastern Promises"--though it's all in good fun.

re: "Sweeney Todd" Cuts into the Oscar Race. To say that it's a "bloodbath" is such a misnomer as the blood is a metaphor in the film. Due to it's somewhat "fake" nature, it doesn't have the "gore" of a Tarantino film for example. In addition, Depp's Sweeney displays all the emotion of a troubled soul---the brooding, the mood changes and the facial expressions are all classic Depp. He can convery more with a raised eyebrow than any actor working today. In addition, Sweeney Todd is the most unique film of 2007. I'm tired of "Old Men" and people trying to "Atone" for their mistakes. Sweeney Todd will haunt you and have you musing over it for days after. One can only hope the Academy will wake up this year and give Depp/Burton their long overdue Oscars.

I enjoy reading reviews from movie critics - they are as entertaining as the movies themselves when written by those who don't get it.
