It's clear that Sotomayor is obese and that may have a negative impact on her disease. At age 54, is she likely to adopt new health habits? Doubtful!

Plenty of people have type 1 diabetes; Athletes who perform at the top of their game, teeny bopper rock stars who tour the world, FBI agents, businesswomen, TV stars, and every day more and more children (and adults) are diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. These folks live very normal, very healthy, very successful lives.

So please, leave diabetes out of this equation.

Such blatant disregard for accuracy truly undermines the substance of the article.

Men who die younger because of their sex. Men who are more suseptable to cancer and high risk behaviors. I have noticed that these points did not appear in any discussion on whether they would die quicker. We do embarass ourselves with these one-sided sexist issues with women.

To Mishmaroo : What point are you trying to raise about the difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetis? Are you suggesting that because type 2 is CORRELATED with obesity that being overweight CAUSED the condition? The CAUSE of type 2 has NOT been verified. A basic stat class should demonstrate the difference between correlation (a relationship) and a cause. There are strong genetic factors in type 2 on the disease and the issue of weight. But, again, what is your point? If a justice had type 2 they would be unfit to sit on the bench? And BTW, both type 1 and 2 are similar conditions. They both involve similar treatments and have similar health outcomes (whether they care for or do not care for their condition). Either clarify your stance or provide a valid one.
