I want so badly to feed my family and myself healthier foods but the money I have available to buy groceries would barely get us 2 or 3 days worth of healthier foods. The media and the government is harping on the high cost to society of obesity but why is no one pressing the food industry to lower costs of healthy foods and raise the costs of all the high-caloric, high-fat foods???

And really - how many Mike Tyson's are out there as opposed to KFC-munching everyday people?

Kaybebaby: Unless you're in Alaska (and probably even there), you can find locally grown foods at least part of the year. Many southern states have year-round farmer's markets, where the food is almost always organic, and much cheaper than you pay for anything in the supermarket. And it's delicious.

The sad part to me is that Americans are unbelievably uninformed about nutrition. Health classes don't cover anything useful like what to eat and how much, and parents love to indulge their children. It's very, very easy to eat well and cheaply. Beans and rice are nutritionally complete, and have served as a staple for people for centuries. Not tasty enough? Go to your local ethnic store (I like to go to the local Indian store here) and buy spices, which are always cheaper than the grocery store. Too busy to cook? Toss it in a rice-maker before you leave for work. A decent rice-maker can cost as little as $20.

I firmly believe that education is the only way to help our population regain control of themselves. I know our public schools are underfunded and overworked, but it might be worth it to have classes on this sort of thing. If not, we're only going to get fatter.

We gravitate towards comfort foods in times of stress....but as Leslie Heinberg mentioned, there is also a direct correlation between stress and weight gain and the circulating stress hormones. I was just told the other day about a new product that addresses both issues. PowerHouse Hit the Deck - a set of 35 exercise cards that combine cardio work with resistance training and works with the stress response at the same time. You can find it at powerhousehitthedeck.com

I think if this country is ever going to tackle obesity it's going to happen when everyone can have access to health care, affordable food choices and a safe place to walk.

In my neighborhood, it's nothing to have someone drive through firing a gun. Not really very encouraging to get out and walk in.

I think there need to be a lot of changes before we can actually look at really resolving 'obesity.' We also need to be more tolerant and understanding of each other. Sometimes I'm ashamed to admit I'm a member of the so-called human race because of the hateful ways people treat each other.

Or a quarter of us are obese, according to the Newsweek-Gallup survey? That's a big discrepancy, but either way the numbers are huge. Not just overweight, but obese. Extremely fat. I don't see that in the world around me. Maybe that's because I don't live in a poor neighborhood. So many people! I just can't get my mind around it. With all the emphasis on diet and exercise you hear about, how could this be?

Honestly, if this is related to a recession/being broke, people are definitely going to be in the mood for the rah rah "This is about personal responsibilty; go out for a run!" mode.

There is no escaping it.

Knowledge followed by action.

In the USA we have lazy, followed by ignorance, followed by "it's not my fault".

It starts with Americans ignorant about the most basic facts of life, nutrition and fitness for their own security, and these same people create children who have no guidance on what to do as well.

If your parents are your first teachers in life and they do not know what to do, then it stands to reason that the offspring will suffer the same plight.

However the biggest bunch of B.S. is that healthy food is expensive, and that is a load of crap, and a typical excuse. What is expensive is dairy, and meat. Dairy being the worst product you can possibly consume. It's just plain fat. There is a reason for babys to nurse on Mother's milk at birth for all mammals, it puts weight on you very fast, and yet humans are the only mammals to consume dairy past infancy. We go against what Nature had intended and we suffer the consequence for this mistake. Just because it can fit in your mouth doesn't mean you have to eat or drink it!!!

During difficult times people often turn to anything that is comforting - "comfort food" exists for a reason. Technology has sped up just about everything, from how quickly we are able to pump our own gas, to online shopping, to how we communicate. Our expectations have increased while our patience has decreased. Combine the two and Americans want things to happen quickly and easily, and in difficult economic times, we want things to be comfortable and reassuring. Fast foods and prepared foods meet these needs, and if we're not careful, they can also make us fat.

The good news is you can eat healthy without bankrupting the budget. It's true! With just a little planning meals can be convenient, inexpensive and healthy.

I say dollar menu be gone! Steer clear of the drive thru and try visitng a local farmers market or join a produce club to take advantage of seasonal fruits and veggies. Fresh produce often costs less when it's in season and has less distance to travel.

Oh, and don't forget the tried and true - use coupons and reward cards. You can save as much as 15 percent on your grocery bill when using coupons.
