Ridiculous commentary referring to Dr. Benjamin as grossly overweight and questioning her ability to effectively function as Surgeon General simply exposes two realities of our culture: 1) some people lack the ability to make critical observations and 2) the ability to speak, write, and/or type are not synonymous with actually having a valuable, insightful opinion.

She is not "grossly overweight". She is, however, a highly intelligent, dedicated physician who is the essence of what it means to be an American and a humanitarian.

So, the next time you go to the doctor, please check the wall for his/her gym membership before you check for credentials.

Gid, she would very easily be classified as obese. For someone who's in a largely symbolic position don't you think she should walk the walk so to speak. What would you say if she were a chain smoker? Other than that she does seem very qualified. Perhaps in her new position she could inspire others and lose some weight to set a further example. It's not simply a matter of vanity. Obesity is a major health epidemic.

I've seen a video of Dr. Benjamin standing beside President Obama, and she did not look "obese" to me. She looked like she might be a little overweight, like most Americans. She probably works such long hours she doesn't go to the gym or concentrate on dieting.

It is true she doesn't look like the actresses who play doctors on "Grey's Anatomy", which is probably where pdskep gets his idea of what a female doctor should look like. She is a Genius grant recipient, a foremost humanitarian, a person who overcame tremendous obstacles to become a doctor, a brilliant physician who has dedicated her life to the poor. But of course, none of this means anything when compared to her physical appearance--the important thing is that we have a Surgeon General who looks like a movie star.
