  • The Moderate Voice: Elections 2008: Bridge

    Anonymous [Edit] | May 15, 2008 09:00 PM
The Republicans seem at present, to be burning bridges between themselves regarding Senator McCain's candidacy, while the Democrats seem to be beginning at least to talk about building bridges. But to build a bridge isnt enough. Leaders can destroy their own groups by not having enough genuine earthy experience on the ground, by not being able to bring bold but effective solutions to longstanding problems, and by failing to have an accurate arial view of the big picture.' A leader needs all. In some semblance of balance. Maybe that's why the word has at least three meanings, all of them visionary: to bridge: to connect one side to the other, one person to another, one group to another, to bond. a bridge: a structure that gives... • Oliver Willisk: The One And Only Reason I Would Like Clinton In The Veep Slot

    Anonymous [Edit] | May 15, 2008 08:43 PM
The vice presidential slot has tended to be the attack dog slot. I don't think Sen. Edwards did a good job of that in 2004 and Joe Lieberman was horrible at it. Al Gore was not bad. I would have to think that the vicious streak the Clinton campaign revels in would be much better directed at the GOP candidate. There are a whole host of negatives to having her on the ticket (a demoralized GOP base would love to have a reason to come vote out Clinton), but fight is not one of them... More

  • The Moderate Voice: Denver, Site of DNC: The Scramble To Pay For It

    Anonymous [Edit] | May 15, 2008 06:33 PM
What with the city of Denver trying to make space for Freedom of Assembly and Freedom of Speech for the thousands of protesters who say they'll be showing up at the Democratic National Convention in Denver in August including Recreate and Code Pink and Free Mumiaamongst others too, there appears to be a slow-down in raising the promised private money to pay for the convention . Denver is a small-big town. People joke and say it's a cow town that outgrew the cows part, but still has the friendly flavor of a small town despite the fact that Denver and suburbs now hold about 1M people. It’s true though. The people here, for the most part, surely would give you the shirts off their backs if you were in need. Nonetheless, fundraising for... More
  • TalkLeft: MT Prosecutors Support Obama

    Anonymous [Edit] | May 15, 2008 03:25 PM
Twelve Montana prosecutors have endorsed Barack Obama: These leaders from across Montana cited Senator Obama's strong record of supporting law enforcement as well as his commitment to protecting individual rights that are important to the lives of all Montanans. The Mayor of Kalispell, MT endorsed Hillary Clinton yesterday: "Hillary Clinton has been standing up for women and families throughout her long career in public service," Kennedy said. "She is the candidate who best understands the issues facing Montana families." Previously, Hillary was endorsed by State Sen. Ken Hansen, Harlem; Rep. Norma Bixby, Lame Deer; Rep. Julie French, Scobey; Rep. Veronica Smalls Eastman, Lodge Grass; Julia Doney, Democratic Activist, Fort... More
  • The Moderate Voice: Hardball Host Chris Matthews Obliterates Conservative Talk Show Host On Bush’s Obama “Appeasement” Charge (UPDATED)

    Anonymous [Edit] | May 15, 2008 12:45 PM
MSNBC Hardball Host Chris Matthews dealt with President George Bush's charge that Senator Barack Obama would appease terrorists on his show and obliterated Los Angeles conservative radio talk show host Kevin James who was on the show to give the Barack-is-an-appeaser side of it. James' problem: he had no idea what actual appeasement is . Note how he tries to get around the issue by talking loud and changing the subject. The problem: even though he takes a lot of heat from some partisans (particularly Democratic progressives), Chris Matthews was an excellent reporter and op-ed column writer (he had an excellent record for political prognostication) before he got on the air. It's a classic case of radio talk show host polemics and volume... More

  • The Moderate Voice: The Impact and Transformational Appeal of Barack Obama

    Anonymous [Edit] | May 15, 2008 12:44 PM
Trying to explain Barack Obama and the impact his appearance is having on people around the world is a gargantuan task. This article from France's Liberation takes a good stab at it by examining his influence on young people - especially on those in the French suburbs which are so often areas of violent confrontation between police and that nation's alienated minority population. In describing how immigrant minorities in France, both young and old, view Obama, François Durpaire and Jean-Claude Tchicaya write for Liberation : Products of postcolonial immigration, the older generation - around the age of Obama’s father - say it's extraordinary to see this in their lifetime and didn't dare imagine such a fate for their own children.... • The Moderate Voice: Elitism: Good for Basketball; Good for Politics?

    Anonymous [Edit] | May 15, 2008 08:58 AM
Watching America today features an article from Italy’s La Stampa, entitled “ Competence Isn’t Elitism ”. How very correct. The final paragraph of the article, translated by Boyd T. DeLanzo , is worth quoting in its entirety. Universal suffrage is only one half of democracy; the other half is education. Only if citizens are put into a condition to know and understand what they are doing, can their vote be counted as being significant and authentically democratic. Otherwise, any charlatan can come along and say anything to please the people and win their consent. Why is it that American citizens understand this when one talks about going to the doctor or deciding who is the best football player, but when one talks about choosing... More
  • The Moderate Voice: Quotes Of The Day: On Bush’s Appeasement Comments Delivered In Israel (UPDATED)

    Anonymous [Edit] | May 15, 2008 08:45 AM
Democratic bigwig Rep. Rahm Emanuel on Bush's comments (see posts below) suggesting that Democratic Senator Barack Obama wanted to appease terrorists: The tradition has always been that when a U.S. President is overseas, partisan politics stops at the water's edge. President Bush has now taken that principle and turned it on its head: for this White House, partisan politics now begins at the water's edge, no matter the seriousness and gravity of the occasion. Does the president have no shame? Actually, to many voters (including many independent voters and some Republicans, if you read the polls) the answer to that question is increasingly and sadly self-evident. Democratic Senator Joe Biden was even more blunt. You can read his... More

  • TalkLeft: Hillary Criticizes Bush's Smear Of Obama

    Anonymous [Edit] | May 15, 2008 07:50 AM
Via Politico . Senator Clinton said: President Bush's comparison of any Democrat to Nazi appeasers is both offensive and outrageous on the face of it, especially in light of his failures in foreign policy. This is the kind of statement that has no place in any presidential address and certainly to use an important moment like the 60th anniversary celebration of Israel to make a political point seems terribly misplaced. Unfortunately, this is what we've come to expect from President Bush. Indeed... More
  • TalkLeft: Does Unifying The Party Involve The Clinton Wing?

    Anonymous [Edit] | May 15, 2008 06:37 AM
In praising John Edwards' excellent speech yesterday endorsing Barack Obama, Paul Rosenberg makes a case for John Edwards as the VP candidate. The case is a pretty good one. With one exception, the blithe disregard for the Clinton Wing of the Democratic Party. Paul writes: I know that in terms of unifying the party, putting a woman on the ticket would be an excellent move . But putting Edwards on the ticket would put the election away. Because of the unique dynamics of this race, it would be one of the rare examples of when a Vice Presidential candidate really can sway an important, if not crucial demographic--the very "Regan Democrat" demographic that McCain cannot win without. . . . Most importantly, Edwards on the ticket would be a... More
  • The Moderate Voice: Bush’s Comments Made Abroad About Obama: A New Low Amid Low Politics

    Anonymous [Edit] | May 15, 2008 06:34 AM
When President George Bush made comments in Israel accusing Democratic Senator Barack Obama of wanting to appease terrorism, it raised several issues. First, he didn't actually name Obama so the White House could say it was all in Mr. Obama's mind. This is the pols' timeless technique of plausible deniability although in this case only a jar of sauerkraut sitting on the shelf at Stop Shop in New Haven, Connecticut would think Bush is actually being misunderstood. The problem: Bush had made comments on Tuesday similar but not quite as blunt as the ones he chose to make on foreign soil. Read our earlier post to recap and be sure to see the update with the link to his earlier comments (and from Senator Joe Lieberman saying Bush... More
  • Crooks and Liars: President Bush Compares Obama’s Iran Diplomacy Statement To Appeasement Of Nazis

    Anonymous [Edit] | May 15, 2008 05:00 AM
During a speech in Jerusalem, President Bush jumped head first into the 2008 presidential campaign by taking a shot at Democratic presidential nominee, Barack Obama, by comparing his willingness to hold diplomatic talks with Iran to the appeasement of Nazis in the 1930's. Download Play Download Play President Bush's foreign policy has been nothing short of a disaster and even MSNBC's Pat Buchanan can't help but call this what it is - an unprecedented smear of an American presidential candidate from outside the country. Buchanan and Harold Ford Jr. both agree that Bush has really stepped in it with these comments and the big question now, as it relates the presidential campaign, is how Senator John McCain reacts. McCain... More
