David Oatney: The World According to Oatney

Newsweek
David Oatney is a 31 year-old freelance writer and former college radio sportscaster. He has published his blog The World According To Oatney since mid-November 2004, when he began it as a way to vent his frustrations at the press for what he viewed as poor coverage of the 2004 election campaign.

In 2006, Oatney was asked by the Knoxville News-Sentinel to be one of three area bloggers to "cover the coverage" of the News-Sentinel's lawsuit against the Knox County Commission for violating the Tennessee Open Meetings Act (the "sunshine law") in appointing county officeholders to 12 vacant positions in a controversial manner that was later ruled illegal. The paper asked bloggers to assist them in covering the trial since the media outlet itself was the Plaintiff.

Oatney also helped bring about Tennessee's first "Bloggers' Day On the Hill" in 2006, by helping coordinate a blogger "meet-up" at the Tennessee State Capitol with the cooperation of the House Republican Caucus and Leadership. It was the first such official event for bloggers hosted at the State Capitol by members of the State's legislature.

Oatney also serves as host of a successful internet political podcast, Oatney On the Air.

In addition to his blogging and writing activities, Oatney serves as an active member of the Knights of Columbus Council 6730 in Morristown, Tennessee. He is also a member of the Volunteer Fire Department in his hometown. He and his wife Nicole reside in White Pine, Jefferson County, Tennessee.
