Zimbabwe's Diamond Mines a New Source of Plunder

Scott Johnson

Robert Mugabe is squandering a glittering opportunity for Zimbabwe. He has botched the development of the newly discovered diamond mines along his country's eastern border, which could be earning Zimbabwe as much as $600 million a month, according to a recent report by Partnership Africa Canada. That's enough to make a big dent in the $8.3 billion the country needs to reach its development and reconstruction goals. Instead, the mines have become a chaotic and militarized battlefield of panhandlers and corrupt police, while Mugabe allows his cronies to funnel the area's riches into their own bank accounts. To keep miners in line, government thugs often resort to violence, and Human Rights Watch has documented some 200 murders in the diamond fields over the past year. By demilitarizing the mining zone and implementing stricter oversight, Mugabe could boost revenue. Instead, Zimbabwe's diamond industry generated a paltry $20 million in the past month, and the illegal mining has also resurrected the label "blood diamond," making Zimbabwean gems a tough sell overseas. For all the energy that Mugabe puts into railing against Western sanctions, he'd be better off helping his country by cleaning up these operations instead.

These profits of doom that continually create barriers of entry for the the revival of the zimbabwean economy when are they going to stop being vindictive, The west refuses to give aid unless certain terms are met, the people try to recover by exploring the vast mineral wealth but still Zimbabweans cannot even exploit what is theirs with attracting degrading insult that only glorify the suffering in zimbabwe (what zimbabweans do with their minerals is their business) this a clear example of how the west sanctions is killing Zimbabweans not Mugabe Please Stop These Gossip Tails of Exploitation at least something is going into the ecnonmy

To Tre23:

Wow Tre,  that is some big moral difference between our country and Zimbabwe.  We don't let executions/murders openly occur, huh?  How about all the other subtle ways people are killed in this country such as:  by terrorists responding to our foreign policy,  killing civilians in Iraq and Afghanistan,  our soldiers being killed fighting imperial wars, our people being killed by drugs because of our failed drug policies, our people being killed by illegal immigrants (in traffic accidents and otherwise) because of our failure to control the border.....Oh,  let me count the ways.  I will not keep my mouth shut as long as irrational fools like you exist!

To airbusrider-

The difference is that the corrupt politicians here are not allowing executions/murders to openly occur. Therein lies our ability to judge. Yes, swindling this government and it's people out of money is unacceptable and should not be stood for, there are not innocent lives being ended due to it. Before you pass judgment on this country think about what your life would be like outside of here and then realize that it would be significantly worse if you were in the same place as those people in Zimbabwe anywhere near those diamond mines. Then keep your mouth shut and appreciate the good life that you lead.
