U.S. Cracks Down on Corruption in Africa

Newsweek
The Foreign Corrupt Practices Act gives U.S. prosecutors a tool for going after American businesses that commit fraud or bribery abroad, but though it's been on the books for 30 years, it's been haphazardly enforced, particularly when it comes to Africa. The Obama administration wants to change that. It's hired scores of legal experts--some 87 new lawyers at the Department of Justice alone--to give the measure sharper teeth, and already charged a former U.S. congressman with violating FCPA rules while in Nigeria. Africa's anti-corruption crusaders are excited that the new vigilance will make a dent against graft there--but they shouldn't hope for too much. Even if the U.S. starts a serious crackdown, plenty of other countries are willing to fill the void. China, especially, has earned a reputation for turning a blind eye toward corruption and recently became the continent's largest trading partner, generating $100 billion in trade last year. Thus, rather than end corruption, greater U.S. enforcement--however noble its intentions--may just ensure that Africa takes its business elsewhere.

Just as he said in his speech in Ghana,"... there have been too many squandered opportunities." What colonialism and imperialism did was leave Africa in shambles. Afterso much was pillaged and plundered. As a result, it left a sense of greed among many of African nation's leaders. The goal as described by Leonardo Dicpario in the movie Blood Diamonds, 'they remain in power long enough to steal enough to go into exile". The problem is that so many had such a low life thuggery mentality that they never saw neither the nation that they represented nor the continent itself on par with the US, USSR, China, Great Britain, and other major global players. Now Africa is poised to exchange European colonialsm for Chinese colonialsim and exploitation. Why can't Africa generate a united/single monetary system. Why can't Africa become a major player in the Space Race. Why can't Africa dominate world politics? Its only logical in the fact that the majority of the world's resources come from Africa. The richest continent but the majority live in horrific and horrendous squalor. A begging rich man, doesn't seem logical now does it? The fact of the matter is that the reason that so much of this has gone on is because so many in the West are in bed with these crooks and criminals. Thus Abacha, Savimbi, Idi Amin, Taylor, and all of their kind knew who and who not to upset. Where do they acquire so many guns from? So many are poor and literally walking around on gold and diamonds, as well as other precious minerals and oil, no food, no quality health care, but everyone has an Ak-47 strapped to their shoulders. It seems that some parts of Africa reflect suburban white America so there is some prosperity somewhere. Put these criminals in jail and those in the West that aid and assist them.

I thought that Obama hadn't done anything to win the Nobel. Well, here's one attempt. Yes, of course, China may cheat, but at least the US is taking the initiative. Aren't we supposed to be the Leading nation of the world? Then, let's act on our title.
