This scientist was simply following epidemiological theory. Causality refers to the relationship between an event (the cause) and a second event (the effect), where the second event is a direct consequence of the first. Science should not say there's a causal link between HIV and AIDS because you can have AIDS without having HIV. Its like saying theres a causal link between lung cancer and cigarettes. There are people who have lung cancer but never smoked cigarettes. Researchers can say there's a causal link between asbestos exposure and mesothelioma.
